Since the beginning of its creation, yoga has always meant a bringing together of the mind and body in complete union and since that time, the main purposes of yoga have not changed, but have improved and been refined. Encouraging the mental, physical and spiritual health of an individual, the history of Ashtanga yoga began in India many thousands of years ago and has a great deal of tradition in its system. In order to understand the history of Ashtanga yoga, you must understand the traditions involved and recognize the four categories of yoga, which are the pre-classical period, classical period, post-classical period and modern-day yoga styles.
The Book of Yoga: Yoga Sutra
According to the history of Ashtanga yoga, the book pertaining to yoga is known as the yoga sutra and this history would not have been completed in the classical period alone. The word yoga itself means the ‘Yolk’ or something which joins other things together and a good example would be joining of a cart to the ox while using a yolk. In order to achieve greater unity and peace, the poses and movements of yoga will bring together all elements of the human mind, body and spirit.
What’s more, you should not be misled into thinking that yoga means just contorting the body into weird poses because that is simply a small aspect of it and there is more to it including ethics, physical postures as well as controlling the breathing and it even includes meditation.
Nowadays, there is a change in the world of yoga and the history of Ashtanga yoga has gone to the past, allowing a more globalized version of yoga and a more experienced renaissance to evolve, allowing a delineation between the spiritual and physical aspects of yoga. The history of Ashtanga yoga has also been witness to the many schools and methods of teaching for yoga over the years, springing new philosophies and approaches to yoga itself.
Nevertheless, the common thread that runs in all forms of yoga and which have not changed much througho ut the h istory of Ashtanga yoga is that the fundamental aim of yoga is to create a concord of the mind, body and also the environment. Rather than see yoga simply as a way to stay lean and strong, the history of yoga teaches us that these postures will help to empower our lives through the use of better mind and body control over time for better health.
