Yoga Today – Modern Yoga Practice

Article by Sarah Russell

Yoga is a form of exercise derived from ancient Hindu practice. It strengthens and stretches the body using poses called asanas. It can also help reduce stress, and help people find inner peace. It’s used by some modern Hindu practitioners as an aid towards attaining enlightenment.

It’s important to remember that yoga is more than just a series of exercises. It applies to the body, but also to the mind and spirit. Yoga derives from philosophies meant to help practitioners attain harmony and spiritual insight. The word is derived from a Sanskrit term meaning to join. The same word may also be related to the word referred to the yokes worn by oxen, and may be the ancestor of our modern words “junction” and “juxtapose”.There are many different schools of yoga, each with its own beliefs and practices. Here are the five most common types of yoga. Remember that there are plenty of other options that aren’t listed here.

Hatha Yoga is the most popular school of yoga, and has been taught commonly in the West for a number of years. This type of yoga focuses on the perfection of the mind through the perfection of the body. It uses many breathing techniques, meditative techniques, and asanas.

Ashtanga Yoga is another popular type of yoga. It’s performed much more quickly than most other schools, and is almost a form of aerobic yoga. Smooth, but speedy transitions between poses are a focus.

Kundalini Yoga focuses on the awakening and focusing of what’s called kundalini energy. This energy is frequently referred to as a type of life energy lying dormant inside us, and may be represented by a coiled serpent.

Mantra Yoga is based around the discipline of calming body and mind using sounds and words. You may be familiar with the chant of “om”. This is a common mantra used by this school of yoga.

Tantra Yoga is famous, or infamous, for its focus on spirituality through sexuality. Like Kundalini Yoga, this school also focuses on kundalini energy, but has a different intent and d ifferent methods for awakening it.

No matter which school you choose, you’ll find that yoga is a rich and satisfying practice. It can benefit most people, no matter what their age, if practiced regularly. Asanas may be adapted to deal with injuries and other physical limitations, making yoga a worthwhile form of exercise for people who can’t do other types.

There are traditionally eight fundamental paths to yoga: Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Purna Yoga, Tantra Yoga, Ashtanga or Raja Yoga, and Maha Yoga. However, in the Western world, when you hear yoga mentioned, it’s usually in reference to Hatha Yoga. In Hindu practice, yoga’s ultimate goal is liberating the soul from the cycle of death and rebirth, as well as from worldly suffering. Through yoga, it is believed to be possible to master the mind, body, and emotions, and to transcend desire.

Your Key to Natural Health:

Yoga and Living

Article by Shreyasretreat

Yoga according to the Masters is realizing that we are united with the divine. The key to reach the highest goal of Yoga, that is self realization is not factual knowledge, but a dedicated practice.

The tradition of Yoga describes a lot of techniques in order to accommodate the beliefs and temperaments of all people. It is important to understand that if we have to practice Yoga seriously, a bit of all these techniques will have to be mixed based on our lifestyles and our personality. In this article we are attempting to convey how a common man while doing his daily activities can practice Yoga.

So, let us begin with the body. The body is a very important vehicle for Yoga and it is very important to maintain this. Therefore, Hatha Yoga describes postures for maintenance of physical health. But the Yoga of body is called the Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga is about using the body in order to realize Yoga. It is about performing our daily duties and work with complete involvement, and not expecting any fruits from it. In other words, if we have to play the role of a mother, according to Karma Yoga, we have to do it with full involvement not expecting any rewards from it. The same holds true when we have to play the role of a spouse, an employee, a friend etc. Hence, Karma Yoga is probably the most easiest practice of Yoga for a common man, and something that can be done 24 hours a day.

Just like we know that we have a body, we also know that we have emotions. The Yoga of emotions is called Bhakti Yoga or the Yoga of devotion. It is expressing devotion to any form which one regards as divinity incarnated. It can be a great saint, it can be a Guru, or it can be any other form of God. The specific form is unimportant, it is the devotion that we personally feel that is important. This method has been used by many religions practiced in the world today. This devotional path is an excellent means of giving direction and release to emotions and feelings, which tend to be pent up or suppressed. T hrough d evotion, the emotions are released and channeled towards making the mind one- pointed. But this is not good path if the devotion is forced upon a person. Only if one is devotionally inclined, he can follow the path of Bhakti Yoga.

The Yoga of our energies is called Kriya Yoga. This energy is nothing but the life force or the vital force which gives us what is called ‘Life’ .Death is considered to be an absence of this life force. Kriya Yoga is very practical. It is done by practicing Asanas (Physical postures), Pranayama (manipulation of breath), Mudra (gestures), Bandha (physio psychic locks), Mantra (special sound pattern which can produce subtle impact and change ) and psychic passage awareness. Most people who attend Yoga classes are in fact performing Kriya Yoga at various levels.

The Yoga of Intellect is called Jnana Yoga. This is probably the most difficult path to Yoga but for few people, it is natural. This Yoga is about development of intuitive faculty. It requires a strong will power and an overwhelming obsessive desire to find answers. The answers are not to be gained by reading, but through experience and self enquiry. A Jnana Yogi first of all needs to throw out all concepts, dogmas and ideas that are not known to be true through personal experience and then must start enquiry. Although people don’t realize it, Jnana Yoga is the method of scientific discovery, artistic creation and musical inspiration as they all defy logic. Therefore, the path of intellect is about pursuing an enquiry through thick and thin until the answer is realized.

These are the four basic forms of Yoga. For different people one form may be easier to practice than the other. We must try to inculcate all of these practices in our daily lives so that we can move ahead in our journey of self discovery through Yoga.

Different Kinds of Yoga

Article by Callie Armstrong

Yoga originally came from India and it dates back over five thousand years ago. Being the oldest defined practice of self development, yoga has greatly developed over the centuries resulting in a variety of yoga practices and branches.Yoga serves the purpose of harmonizing and identifying the equilibrium between body and mind, but each yoga branch is set to serve different needs and purposes.

Hatha Yoga

If you are interested in increasing the state of your well-being you should direct yourself to the practice of hatha yoga. It is considered to be one of the primary forms of modern physical therapy. Apart from meditation, which is the common practice for all yoga branches, hatha yoga teaches you a series of important postures (known in yoga terminology under the name of asanas) and breathing exercises (entitled pranayamas).

Karma Yoga

Another common and highly appreciated branch of yoga which promotes the principle according to which everything that happens to us in our present existence is a direct consequence of our previous actions. As a result, karma yoga encourages its practitioners to try to eliminate all the negativism and the selfishness from their present, in order to avoid having to deal with them in the future. Actually, karma yoga should be practiced everyday, including when being at work, and activities carried out with the precise goal of helping other people, such as Peace Corps, can be easily associated with the karma yoga path.

Raja Yoga

Another branch of yoga, which, this time, places a great accent on the meditation. Known also under the name of classical yoga, raja yoga is a more complex form of training, which is why it typically starts with hatha yoga, in order to prepare the body for more advanced training stages. Studies have demonstrated that the persons attracted by this form of yoga are, as in general, more introspective people, interested in profound meditation. Moreover, various religious groups devote themselv es to th is yoga path, which is close to a monastic or contemplative lifestyle.

Jnana Yoga

Jnana yoga is a branch of yoga directed mainly to the scholars and it implies a development of the intellect through the study of yoga tradition scripts and texts. It is also known to be the yoga of the heart and wisdom. Although it is described as the most difficult of all yoga practices, jnana yoga is also one of the most direct and challenging paths.

Bhakti YogaAnother popular yoga branch, which promotes and sustains the idea of devotion, is the bhakti yoga. The main message transmitted by this yoga path is that there is something divine in any form of creation. Thus, it is important to tolerate, accept and respect any forms of life we come in close contact with.

These are, without any doubt, only a few of the various yoga branches or paths, but, nevertheless, the important thing is that anyone can find a yoga practice, which is able to promptly suit his or her needs of finding the inner equilibrium and peace.
