Where does yoga come from?
Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism are among the cultures that embrace forms of yoga. Yoga as it is practiced today results from the influences of all these cultures. At its core, it involves cultivating discipline of body and mind, and leads to better health or even spiritual enlightenment if taken that far. “Yoga” in Sanskrit, means “union” or “joining”, referring to union of ourself and the divine.
There are actually several features of yoga – breath control, meditation, conduct, diet, and physical poses more commonly known as hatha yoga.

How Meditation can Benefit You
WHat many people are aware of, is that meditation is actually derived from the yoga sys tem of t eachings, and as such provides many of the same benefits, such as relief from stress. You can achieve a calm state of mind through meditatation. Most forms of meditation are about directing your attention to one specific point. It could be a thought, a word, visual point, or your own breathing. This focus takes your mind away from the things that are a constant source of worry or stress, and eventually brings about a calm state of mind. And this is achieved purely with the power of your own mind, without the use of pills or medicine. Through the practice of meditation, you can learn to manage and even eliminate negative emotional reactions, anxiety, stress, and worry.
A good yoga and meditation practice can help you relax your mind and body, and the relaxed state can be maintained at all times. And, if you so wish, you can use meditation to progress your own spirituality. Some may even liken it to salvation. But more importantly, anyone can learn to meditate, and it does not require special equipment.
